Whether gallows brackets chimney support provide adequate support for a chimney stack when chimney breasts below are removed will depend on a number of factors:
-
- Party Wall Agreement must first be produced by the respective owners and will usually consist of three parts:
- A set of guidelines describing how the proposed works should progress.
- A schedule of condition of the adjoining property, often supported by a set of photographs.
- Drawing(s) showing the details of the proposed works.
- Have chimney breasts been removed from the adjoining property sharing the party wall? If they have been removed and gallows brackets chimney support have been used, then the use of gallows brackets will not be acceptable.
- The thickness of the party wall between the chimney breasts should be at least 215mm thick in order to be strong enough to support the gallows brackets and remaining chimney breast and chimney stack.

- The weight of the brickwork to be supported should not be to great however otherwise gallows brackets chimney support will not be suitable.
- The brickwork of the chimney should be bonded to the party wall otherwise the chimney will need to be temporarily supported until the new supports are in place. It is critical that all Health and Safety planning is in place before any work is done.
